Yeah ok it’s cute when the kids are off for the first week and the school run rush is over. But then the reality kicks in and you see August stretched ahead of you. Here’s a few things that keep them occupied for longer than an episode of Peppa Pig, without spending a year's wage on play centres and days out.

Lego

Still a classic. Still keeps them occupied for ages. Mine usually just fight about who can build the biggest tower. I love that you can buy the little add on kits like this cupcake Cafe, so it helps keep things fresh. You can also get the Duplo sets for smaller hands. When you really need to fill some time, grab some tupperware boxes and get them to organise the bricks by colour. Then put the kettle on!

Binoculars

There’s only so many walks you can go on before you need to switch it up a bit. Kids love binoculars, especially if you sit them down to watch some Bear Grylls first. Every walk then turns into an adventure. You can write out lists with things for them to find like mini beasts or pine cones, or even set them up in the back garden to do some bird watching. Sometimes (often) I draw out maps of all the shops I need to go to and get them to see who spots the shop first or who can find what I need on the shelf. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Classic Games

Don’t underestimate the oldies! If your kids can read then get Junior Scrabble. Honestly, it takes them so long to find the words, it can easily kill a rainy afternoon. My sons also love Dominoes which, not only can you play, but you can stack them up and knock them down. It speaks to their destructive side. Another favourite for us is Hungry Hippos. Yes it’s noisy but then they have to find all the missing balls afterwards too so it’s a win win. I know it’s tempting to reach for the tablets but the old school games spark their imagination and give you some nostalgia into the bargain.

A wine cooler

No, not for the fruit shoots, this ones for you. The summer holidays can be a slog. We all love the day trips and the staycations but all those extra hours to fill can be exhausting and expensive. Which is why come Friday, we can crack open a bottle and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. This is when it’s more than acceptable to shove them in front of their tablet, breathe a sigh of relief and grab the wine glasses. I love this Alessi Circus wine cooler because it reminds me I’m basically a ringmaster to my two very own little clowns.
